Melbourne Victory will take on Greek powerhouse Olympiakos in a big-name friendly on May 19 at Etihad Stadium.

Victory officially announced the clash on Wednesday morning through Twitter, with the 38-time Greek champions to make their first visit to Australia since 1978.

According to Victory, Oympiakos will be bringing a full-strength squad for the encounter as the Greek Super League season finishes in April with the side featuring five members of the Greek national squad who will take the field in the upcoming European Championship.

In a big test for the rebuilding Victory side, they may be facing the reigning Greek champions as Olympiakos are currently seven points clear atop the Greek table.

“It is an honour for our club to finally make the visit to Australia,” Olympiakos president Evangelos Marinakis told the Victory website.

“We hope to further promote our club to the thousands of Greek expats in Australia and entertain them with our special brand of attacking football – we are rejoicing and cannot wait to bring joy to the throng of our supporters.”

Olympiakos captain Avram Papaadopoulos said: “It’s with much joy and anticipation that we make the trip to Melbourne. We have heard that there are thousands of Olympiakos fans in Australia waiting to see our team in action and we will not disappoint them.”
